Antonio Banderas is Herod, and he sings a (very camp and surprisingly not awful!) musical number called “It’s Good to be King” while seemingly either drunk or stoned. This should tell you everything you need to know. Need more? It’s the nativity story, but it’s not your grandma’s nativity story! This Mary is a go-getting strong independent woman who just wants to be a teacher! Joseph is a budding inventor/genius who just wants to build contraptions! And so on. In other words, it’s cringe as fuck with the vibe of a bad live-action Disney remake. Look, a lot of kids are going to grow up being shown this in Sunday School every Christmas and there are far worse movies that could have filled that void, but I can’t recommend that you watch it voluntarily.
