If this were live-action it would be ranked much higher. Instead, it’s a living nightmare of uncanny-valley animation and oddly menacing characters, as a passive protagonist – a void where a character should be – follows a nonsensical, boring and downright creepy story. It’s such an interminable slog: we paused it an hour in to make dinner and even having seen it before I could not believe that we had only been watching for an hour, or that another half-hour could possibly still remain. Christ, just look at the dead-eyed, wax-figure-like figures that populate the background of every shot – or the foreground during the musical numbers. It’s a soul-destroying experience.
